Winslow Lady Bulldogs ousted by Sahuarita 4-0 from state tournament

WINSLOW, Ariz. — The Winslow Lady Bulldogs were defeated 4-0 by the Sahuarita Lady Mustangs in the quarterfinals of in the Arizona 3A Conference Championship Tournament at the Rose Mofford Complex in Phoenix May 3.

Sahuarita played Snowflake, 3-2 winners over Show Low, on May 4 at the Rose Mofford Complex and lost to the Lady Lobos 3-2.

Sahuarita took a 28-5 record into the semifinals. Winslow finished the season with a 19-11 record. The Lady Mustangs had a 12-game winning streak going into their game with Snowflake.

Sahuarita scored in the top of the fourth inning on a hit and an error and built a 4-0 lead in the top of the fifth on four hits and an error. Sahuarita advanced to the semifinals.

Gracie Mejia got the shutout win, her 14th of the season with only one loss. She gave up five hits and two walks while fanning six.

Jordyn Johnson took the loss, working four and two thirds innings and giving up four runs, only two of which were earned on six hits and a walk. She had six strikeouts.

Justine Butterfield worked two and a third innings giving up a hit while striking out three.

Sahuarita had six hits led by Diamonique Villa who was two for three with a double. Leah Salas was one for three with an RBI. Hailey Tanori was one for four with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Kianna Galindo was one for four with an RBI.

Winslow had just five hits. Johnson and Maycee Cunningham were two for three. Desbah White was one for two.

In other games May 3, Snowflake defeated Show Low 3-2, Pusch Ridge defeated Yuma Catholic 8-5 and was to meet Sabino which upset second seeded River Valley 5-0.

The Lady Bulldogs will graduate just three seniors and have 15 underclassmen returning for next season, but will have a new head coach.

Kelli Fifelski has resigned her position at the school after a very successful career mentoring the Lady Bulldogs.

Sabino Wins State 3A Conference State Tournament

The Sabino Lady Sabercats defeated 4-0 the Snowflake Lady Lobos 14-2 to win the Arizona 3A Conference Championship Tournament.

Sahuarita played Snowflake, 3-2 winners over Show Low, in the semifinals.

Sabino senior hurler Danielle Kirchofer threw an outstanding game, giving up only one earned run, a second inning home run by Lady Lobo slugger Hallie McCray. Sabino had scored five in the top of the first inning and one in the second to lead 6-1. Snowflake scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning but Sabino had plated three in the top of that inning and scored in the top of the sixth for a 10-2 lead and completed the scoring in the top of the seventh.

The Lady Sabercats had 16 hits with a four for four performance by Madison Moreno. Sydney Gray was two for two. Kirchofer had a double and a triple, Cassandra Castaneda had three doubles, Riley Carley had two hits, Hannah Stark was two for two with a home run.

For Snowflake, Kaylee Thomas was three for four. Heather Whipple and Lanee Penrod had hits, Jordyn Powers had a double and Hailee McCray a home run.
